What is Water Polo?

Water Polo is a very misunderstood sport, it is in fact a team sport. The team consists of six fieldplayers and one goalkeeper. These players can be substituded at any time during the game and there is also no penalty to how many substitutes there are. The winner of the game is the team that has scored the most goals by getting the ball past the other team's goalkeeper into the net. This game incorporates a lot of physical contact between the players, swimming, passing the ball while being covered by a defender and scoring on the other team's goalkeeper. For this reason Water Polo has many similarities with soccer or hand-ball because they are trying to score on the goalie and also with Ice Hockey, in the manner that sometimes a team will be a man-up or down. Finally the physical aspect of the sport can be compared to American Football or wrestling, in the water the players will be fighting with each other to be having the upper hand on the other team, even if it means injuring one another.

  1. Franz! Since my boyfriend plays water polo (Brandon Yasses), I am very familiar with the sport. I understand that this game involves a lot of physical contact, as well as hard work and dedication. You compared water polo to soccer and ice hockey, but it is also similar to lacrosse and field hockey in many ways. The overall objective of the game is basically the same for all of these sports, and takes just as much as effort too. I believe you are a goalkeeper, just like Brandon is, if I am correct. That position obviously requires a lot of stamina and strength. Overall, water polo is quite an interesting sport that I hope to learn much more about from reading this blog.
