Water Polo Stars - Wolf Wigo

In every sport, there is an unstoppable force; there is a fantastic player that seems to be superhuman. In soccer it's Cristiano Ronaldo/Lionel Messi, in water polo, it's the great Wolf Wigo. He was born on May 8, 1973, as a child he had some success from swimming, but then quickly transferred to water polo because of the love of competition. By the age of 13 he was already the youngest player in his club, earning NYAC Utzinger awards and was a Prep All-American 3 years in a row! Then when he was attending high school, he was a member of the only 17-under team to receive a National Junior Olympic title.
Quickly out of high school, Wigo was recruited to Stanford University, in which he led his team to 2 NCAA championships; he is one of the 9 athletes in the University’s history to be named an All-American athlete all four years. Through college Wigo was picked for the US National Water Polo squad in 1993. Then in 1996 he became the first player from the east coast to make the US Olympic team, since 1956! Wigo participated in the Olympic Games through 1996, 2000 and 2004, and he was the team captain from 2001 to 2004. During the 2000 Olympics, Wigo was the team’s leading scorer with a total of 16 goals. Wolf Wigo revolutionized East Coast water polo, allowing others to follow his footsteps. Also, Water Polo runs in his family; Wigo’s twin brothers were recruited to Stanford in 2006 from Florida’s own, Northeast school in Oakland Park. The twins led their school to their first state championship in 2004, and maintained the title for the rest of their high school carrer; 2005 and 2006.
